Alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine

You need to be very careful with stimulants such as alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine during pregnancy. They can be very harmful to your child.

You should not drink Alcohol while you are pregnant. It is impossible to say how much alcohol is not harmful to the baby. Therefore: avoid alcohol completely during pregnancy. Remember: desserts, sweets, or sauces may contain alcohol!

You do not have to give up on caffeineBut you should not have too much of it. You can drink 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day. You can also drink green or black tea. However, drink a maximum of 4 cups a day.

Be careful! Caffeine is also found in other drinks. For example, in iced tea, coke, iced coffee, drinks with guarana and others.

While you are pregnant, you should avoid energy drinks, they contain too much caffeine. You should also avoid drinks with quinine. For example, tonic water or bitter lemon. If you are not sure, look at the bottle. The packaging will tell you the drinks’ ingredients.

Food that can be a risk

The woman’s body goes through a lot of changes during pregnancy. Sometimes it is difficult for the body to fight off germs and other pathogens that can make you sick. This can be dangerous to the health of the mother and the child.

Pathogens can also be found in certain foods. This is why pregnant women should not eat certain foods:

  • No raw meat and no meat that is not fully cooked. For example, carpaccio or steak tartare. Do not eat medium cooked steak either.

  • No raw meat products.For example, salami, Landjäger, Kantwurst, Mettwurst, raw ham, smoked meat or bacon.

  • Do not drink raw milk. Do not eat raw milk products, like some cheeses. You must heat them well before eating. Look at the packaging to see if it says "made with raw milk".

  • Remove rind from cheese. Do not eat soft cheese or smear-ripened cheeses. The rind of these cheeses is washed with a mixture of water and salt during the production.

  • Pay particular attention to the cleanliness of sliced sausages and cheesesthat are packaged in the supermarket. This also applies to marinated meat.

  • No raw or undercooked eggs.For example, soft or fried eggs. Eggs should be cooked for at least 10 minutes.
    Do not eat any dishes containing raw eggs like tiramisu.

  • No raw or semi-raw fish or seafood. For example, sushi or oysters.

  • No smoked or pickled fish.For example, smoked or graved salmon.

  • No pre-cut, packaged salads.Wash vegetables, salad, herbs, and fruit thoroughly.

  • No raw sprouts and seedlingsthat have not been heated. No frozen berries that have not been heated.

  • As a precaution, do not eat open pickled foods, ready-made sandwiches, open salads and freshly squeezed juices in food shops, restaurants, or canteens.

  • Some fish contain heavy metals.These are harmful to the body. They are bad for mother and child. Heavy metals are mainly found in predatory fish species with a lot of fat.
    For example:

      • Tuna
      • Swordfish
      • Halibut
      • Pike
      • Shark
      • Marlin
      • Snapper
      • Butterfish
      • King mackerel or
      • Brickfish

    It is best not to eat these fish during pregnancy.
    For the same reason, you should not eat offal such as liver and kidneys.

  • You must absolutely not go on any slimming diets or unbalanced diets during pregnancy. You should also not eat a purely vegan diet.
