Kitchen hygiene

Babies get sick easily if their food is not clean. Children between 6 and 12 months often get diarrhoea if they eat contaminated food. This can be dangerous for children because they lose a lot of fluids and nutrients.

It is very important to be careful with the baby’s food. When your baby is 5 months old, they start eating solid foods. If you buy baby food in jars, the food is usually tested and safe if the best-before date has not expired. But the food can still be contaminated by dirty dishes, for example. Always store baby food according to the instructions on the packaging.

Important tips for hygiene

  • Wash your child's and your hands with soap and warm water before eating.

  • Keep the kitchen clean. Dishes, work surfaces, sinks and other parts must be clean.

  • Only use very clean water. If you have a private well, professionals must check the well regularly.

  • Only use food that is in perfect condition.

Handle your food carefully

  • Make sure to always store food in a cool place. This also applies to the way home from the shops. It is especially important for meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, and dairy products.

  • If you store raw and cooked foods in the fridge at the same time, cover them. Also, store them separately from each other.

  • Prepare food and drinks as freshly as possible.

  • If you cook food yourself, eat it immediately. If you have leftovers, freeze them. You can keep food up to 1 month at a temperature of at least minus 18 degrees.

  • Do not put food back in the freezer after it defrosted.

  • When you buy baby food, always follow the instructions on the packaging.

Be careful with the microwave!

Microwaves heat food unevenly. Food may feel only slightly warm on the outside but be very hot on the inside. Your child could burn their mouth. Always stir the food after taking it out of the microwave.

Look at the packaging

When you buy baby food, read the instructions on the packaging. Prepare and store the food according to the instructions.

If your baby is old enough to eat solid foods, you no longer need to boil the drinking water.
