"Quetschies" or “squeezies” are very small plastic pouches that contain, for example, mashed fruit, rice pudding or dessert cream. These food pouches have special lids to suck the contents. Quetschies often contain mashed fruit and vegetables. They seem like a healthy option. But they usually have a lot of sugar in them. Remember: fructose is also a kind of sugar. Therefore, a Quetschie is not the same as a piece of fruit.

Children take in a lot of energy from Quetschies. As a result, your child may easily overeat. One Quetschie contains up to 15 grams of sugar!

Some parents give their baby Quetschies as a solid food. Solid food is the first food that the baby eats in addition to breast milk or baby formula. If you want to feed your child Quetschies, feed them with a spoon. Your baby should not drink them directly from the pouch or a glass, as they will eat the food too quickly.

Be careful! If your child sucks on foods with sugar for a long time, it can lead to tooth decay.

Most Quetschies are labelled for children aged 1 year and older. But at this age, your child should already be eating solid food. They have learned to eat independently, to chew solid foods and to handle plates, cups, and cutlery.

Be careful! If your child mainly eats from Quetschie-pouches, it may take longer for them to learn how to eat properly.

Tips:

  • For snacks on the go, pack sliced fruit, pieces of vegetables, bread, or bread rolls.

  • Do not offer your child Quetschies instead of fresh fruit.

  • If you want, your child can sometimes have a Quetschie. But make sure to buy products with no added sugar.

  • It is best to feed the contents with a spoon.

  • Also remember that Quetschies create packaging waste.
