As part of the co-operation "Eat right from the start!" (Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety GmbH, Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection and the umbrella organisation of Austrian social insurance companies), target group-specific and habitat-oriented measures are being developed to improve the nutrition of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and children up to the age of 3. One of the aims of the programme is to process scientifically based findings on the topic of "complementary feeding" in order to lay the foundations for updating existing, sometimes controversial, recommendations. In particular, the existing recommendations on the consumption of animal milk and dairy products in infants and young children are not consistent or sufficiently evidence-based.

For this reason, a systematic review on the topic of "Health aspects of animal milk consumption up to the end of the 3rd year of life" (see download below) was compiled together with the Department of Evidence-Based Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology at Danube University Krems and used as the basis for the recommendations.

Systematic review - animal milk consumption

The present recommendations on cow's milk consumption in the first year of life (see download below) were developed together with experts in the field of infant nutrition and with the commissioners of the "Eat right from the start!" programme, also taking into account other German-language recommendations. The result was presented to the National Nutrition Commission (NEK) on 19 June 2013 and adopted unanimously.

The recommendation applies to metabolically healthy, full-term infants with and without a genetic predisposition and to both breastfed and non-breastfed children.
